Static Rotation Choice

Important limitation

This is a custom mental-rotation worksheet, not the Tetris-based procedure used in clinical trials. It cannot enforce timing, pause while the page is hidden, save data, or provide an automated follow-up.

1. Practice before using an intrusive image

Open the first four problems below. Study each source, open the problem once you have the orientation in mind, choose the rotation, then reveal the answer. Do this before selecting or cueing any intrusive image.

Problem 1. Study this source shape, decide you have it in mind, then open this problem to hide it and see the target.

Target

1. No turn
2. ¼ turn clockwise
3. ½ turn
4. ¾ turn clockwise
Reveal answer after choosing

¼ turn clockwise

Problem 3. Study this source shape, decide you have it in mind, then open this problem to hide it and see the target.

2. Only after practice: choose one recurring visual intrusion

Use one unwanted visual image. If you currently intend to act on a harmful image, or you are not confident you can keep yourself or someone else safe, do not use this experiment; use immediate human support instead.

Scheduled-use guardrail

Use this as a planned experimental session, not every time an intrusive image appears. Repeating a task specifically to cancel an obsession or force certainty can become a neutralizing ritual.

Privately note, on paper if useful: whether it is a memory or an imagined/feared scene; its approximate spontaneous frequency in the past 7 days; and one 0–10 rating each for vividness, distress, and urge to neutralize. Do not write content you do not want to retain.

3. Brief cue

Read your private label or recognize the selected image. Let it become identifiable without deliberately intensifying or analyzing it. Count slowly to five. Five seconds is a Lab implementation choice, not a validated optimal dose.

4. Start a separate 20-minute timer and continue

Work continuously through the remaining problems. Each problem initially shows only the source. Once you have held its orientation in mind, open the problem: the source disappears and the target appears. Choose the rotation, then reveal the answer. When you reach the end, return to problem 5 and continue until 20 minutes have elapsed.

5. Stop when 20 minutes have elapsed

Do not repeatedly bring the image back to test whether it changed. If you need to stop early because the exercise is distressing, simply stop; you do not need to bring the image back to mind or complete an immediate rating.

Optional one-time post-task check-in

Only if you want a research-style immediate measure, record these once and then leave the image alone:

These are secondary measures, not a “did it work?” score.

6. Optional later follow-up

If you want a longitudinal measure, use the printable spontaneous-intrusion follow-up (days 1–7 and optional week 5). Record unexpected appearances; do not deliberately test the image.

Read the evidence and limitations.
